About George Ward
An enduring presence in American nature photography for over thirty years, George Ward’s images have been widely featured in national publications, including many appearances in the Audubon Society and Sierra Club calendars and note cards. Magazine credits include Sierra, Newsweek, Outside, Backpacker, Outdoor Photographer, Nature’s Best, Smithsonian and Sunset. His work has also appeared in numerous books showcasing the natural history of the West, and his art prints are part of many private and corporate collections.
George’s first memories of nature in art trace back to early childhood and the astonishing work of John James Audubon. Later in life, after focusing on music for most of the 1970s, George obtained a Nikon camera and for several years taught himself photography. He went on to use the 4X5 view camera exclusively between 1988 and 2008, and currently uses Nikon DSLRs.
About the Images
Each image on this site is made either from one sheet of 4×5 film, or one digital capture. George avoids combining multiple exposures—a process which often wanders from the reality in front of the camera. His intention is to faithfully convey the energy, peace and sense of renewal that contact with wild places brings.
